Managing anger takes practice and foresight to minimize the damage it can cause to ourselves, our work relationships, and those we love most. Here are a few positive ways to deal with anger management.
Breathe deeply
A mother’s mantra is to count to ten and take the time to inhale deeply in and out before responding in anger to the actions of a child. You don’t have to be a harried mom to use this technique. You need the oxygen in the system to call the negative effects of adrenaline; taking the time to count before reacting gives you a chance to assess a situation and determine if you are overreacting. Counting to ten may not be long enough! Give yourself as much time counting as you need to calm down sufficiently to act rationally.
Leave the situation
Sometimes, a little geographical distance from the source of stress is all you need to collect yourself and act appropriately. Taking a walk is a great way to release some of those negative emotions, but if that’s not possible then just going into the next room may have to do.
